Toast’s Brewery Partner: Wold Top

At Toast Ale, we work with established breweries to create our unique beer. There are now a lot of breweries across the UK – about 1,700 at the last count – but they’re not all running at full capacity. When they’re not brewing their own beer, either the equipment sits unused while the brewers keep a watchful eye on the fermenting tanks, or they brew for others. We’re all about minimising our footprint and using space, time and expertise that would otherwise be wasted, so we’re taking full advantage of the slack in the system.

Our latest brewery partner is Wold Top Brewery. We are so thrilled to be working with them as they are one of the most environmentally sustainable breweries in the UK – they even won the “Best Green Business” at the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) Business Awards in 2013.

Wold Top use locally sourced ingredients, from the pure, chalk filtered water that travels only metres from a borehole to the brewery, to the barley that is exclusively Wolds grown and malted by family maltsters. The crops are surrounded with two metre margins to maintain wildlife biodiversity and maintain 35 acres of species rich chalk grassland that is home to varied flora and fauna.

The brewery and the farm are powered by renewable energy, with two wind turbines on site. Waste is also responsibly managed, with reed beds filtering waste water, hops being recycled as garden mulch, and spent grains being picked up in a trailer by a local farmer and fed to his cows.

So the next time you enjoy a chilled beer, raise a Toast to the team at Wold Top … and give yourself a massive pat on the back for drinking what may just be the world’s most environmentally-friendly beer. Cheers!
